Introduction

Jersey has governed itself since the 1204 Battle of Rouen, whereby King John of England lost to King Philippe-Auguste of France. This defeat meant that Normandy, which at the time included the Channel Islands, was no longer united with England. The islanders, however, sided with King John who allowed them their own laws.
