Introduction

Bermuda (32°18′N 64°47′W) is located off the east coast of the United States, some 640 miles east-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The territory comprises an archipelago of many islands; estimates range from 130 to 360.  The official land area is 53.7km² (20.73 miles²).  There are eight islands connected by bridges and causeways that make up “mainland” Bermuda.  There are also approximately 193 other smaller islands/islets measuring 30m² or greater. Of these, 56 islands are inhabited, or were at one time.
