After banking and financial services, the second-largest industry in Bermuda is tourism. Over half a million tourists visit annually, many by cruise ship, and mostly from the USA, UK and Canada. This presents a challenge to the old narrow roads and parking. Accordingly, tourists are not able to hire cars - the Government has maintained a ban on rental cars (although low-power motor scooters and two passenger electric vehicles are available for hire) in order to limit congestion and pollution. Indeed, resident Bermudians are also permitted to keep only one car per household for similar reasons. |
