Threats / Problems / Issues

Bermuda is one of the most densely inhabited territories in the world, and habitat loss due to urbanisation and development has been an increasingly serious threat since the 19th century. During the course of the 20th century, over 60% of Bermuda’s mangroves were lost to coastal and inland development. The growth of tourism and the associated infrastructure requirements has been an important additional strain on the islands’ ecology.
