Around 6,000 tourists visit South Georgia every year. There is no airstrip on South Georgia and no overnight accommodation is available, therefore most arrive by cruise ship or yacht. According the Government of SGSSI, tourism has little or no negative impact on SGSSI’s wildlife and environment. There are strict policies, guidelines and legislation, which are enforced by the government. Furthermore, the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) set high standards and promote responsible travel in the Antarctic. The South Sandwich Islands do not have any facilities for tourism and are visited primarily by survey ships on scientific excursions. |
