Alderney’s recycling plant is small and the waste management team sort waste by hand. Currently approximately 70% of waste on Alderney is not recycled. The UK average recycling rate is 45%. After sorting, all waste is shipped to Guernsey where it is either recycled or sent to landfill. With Guernsey’s landfill sites close to capacity however, a decision needs to be made as to where Alderney’s waste will go in the future. The islands is looking into making improvements to their waste management system by updating the recycling centre technology and trialling new kerbside recycling and green waste schemes.
