Associated with LIVE: Teaching Through Nature, the Track a Gannet (TAG) project is an experimental project which is revealing an insight into the life cycle of the Northern gannet. Jointly run by Alderney Wildlife Trust, University of Liverpool and British Trust for Ornithology, TAG allows gannet movements to be tracked using GPS tags and 3G mobile data. Gannets usually fly up to 500km on a fishing expedition, although the data from 2015 showed one gannet flew a huge 2,700km in under a week, from Alderney to Scandinavian waters and back. The flight was the longest recorded foraging trip for the species and made news headlines internationally.
