Funding was received from the UK Government’s Overseas Territories Environment Programme (OTEP) to carry out projects such as a feasibility study for rat eradication on Dog Island, and the distribution of public information leaflets on a range of themes, from migratory species to climate change. Dog Island was officially declared rat free in 2014 following work by Fauna and Flora International (FFI) and partners to remove all the alien invasive rodents. According to FFI the number of pairs of nesting seabirds found on Dog Island is now over 200,000 alongside endemic lizards and endangered sea turtles. Reptile populations have increased by more than threefold in the absence of black rats.
