Although the UK claim overlaps with those of Argentina and Chile, the Antarctic Treaty neither recognises nor disputes any individual territorial claim. Thus, it effectively suspends these claims and provides an internationally agreed regime for the whole continent. The Antarctic Treaty is indefinite in duration and remains in force. In consequence, BAT has a very different legal status from all other UK Overseas Territories in that its legal and administrative governance by the UK is overlain by the provisions of the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS). The ATS allows any signatory nation to establish scientific stations in Antarctica.
