Features of Natural Interest

The bird fauna of BAT includes almost all of the species known to breed on the Antarctic continent. BAT has 19 species of regularly breeding birds – almost all oceanic seabirds. It is particularly significant for emperor Aptenodytes forsteri, gentoo Pygoscelis papua, chinstrap P. antarcticus and adélie penguins P. adeliae, southern giant petrel Macronectes giganteus, Cape petrel Daption capense, southern fulmar Fulmarus glacialoides and snow petrel Pagodroma nivea.

Snow petrel: although mainly coastal or nesting far inland, this is one of the few animal species which have been seen at the South Pole.
