A comprehensive account of the history of the Chagos Archipelago was published in 2016 by the Chagos Conservation Trust: Chagos: a History - Exploration, Exploitation, Expulsion, by Nigel Wenban-Smith and Marina Carter.  


The first to establish sovereignty were the French from Mauritius in the 1770s. Then the British came into power in 1814.Human settlements started on the Chagos Archipelago less than 250 years ago.
