An emergency coral assessment expedition was launched on the 5th of April 2017, with a team involving scientists from Bangor University, ZSL and Oxford University and funded by Bertarelli Foundation. This assessment aimed to identify the effects of increasing temperatures and ocean acidification on the coral species of the archipelago; survival rates of coral species, comparing new species records with historical records and assessed how the marine reserve copes with climate change in comparison to the neighbours. This assessment was launched as a result of the major bleaching event that occurred in 2016.
