The Blue Iguana Recovery Programme (BIRP) was set up by the National Trust in 1990 with the aim of securing the long-term survival of wild populations of the blue iguana. Captive-bred individuals have been successfully reintroduced to the Salina Reserve, where they are beginning to breed independently. The programme recently celebrated its 1000th release of a blue iguana into natural habitat. Additional reintroductions and continued monitoring and protection of habitat may be needed to ensure the future safety of the species.
