Features of Natural Interest

There are important areas of tropical dry forest habitats, including around the Mastic Reserve on Grand Cayman. The canopy includes Cedar Cedrela odorata, Red Birch Bursera simaruba, and White Bullet Sideroxylon salicifolium. Historically, this forest has been highly disturbed by humans, mainly in connection with timber extraction. The dry forest has been slow to recover from these activities as the evergreen hardwood trees are very slow-growing. Some of the best surviving examples of intact primary forest are now to be found on Little Cayman.
