Features of Natural Interest

Coastal scrub and degraded secondary forest occupy much of the rest of the land area. Stands of secondary forest at various stages of development commonly include a canopy of coconut Cocos nucifera, silver thatch palm Coccothrinax argentata, seagrape Coccoloba uvifera, Indian-almond Terminalia catappa, and Australian pine Casuarina equisetifolia. The intervening agricultural matrix comprises citrus, bananas, plantains, mangoes, yams, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, cassava, watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumbers, green and hot peppers, tomatoes, leafy vegetables, coconuts, avocado, breadfruit, papaya and sapodilla.
