Gibraltar is synonymous with a certain degree of political complexity. Since 1713 Gibraltar has been under British sovereignty with many territorial challenges from Spain over the years. In 2002, 99% of the population voted against joint Spanish and British ownership, preferring to remain a UK Overseas Territory.
