The first studies of the flora of Gibraltar were carried out by botanists from the UK, from the Victorian era onwards. An increasing interest from Gibraltarians led to the setting up of GOHNS in 1976, leading to local expertise. This grassroots movement led to a more widespread interest in conservation and the drafting of strong conservation legislation, including very complete protection of flora.
