Britain’s decision to leave the European Union has caused the issue of Gibraltar’s status to resurface once again. Because Gibraltar is part of UK’s membership of the EU. it will no longer have membership to the EU, despite Gibraltar voting overwhelmingly (96%) to stay within the EU. This significant political upheaval is likely to complicate the current relationship with bordering Spain, including problems for environmental conservation. However a separate agreement has been made under which Gibraltar would join the European Union's Schengen Area, thus easing movement between Gibraltar and Spain.
