Introduction

Gibraltar was ceded from Spain to Britain by the Treaty of Utrecht, in 1713, after Spain’s defeat in the War of Spanish Succession. Since then, various Spanish Governments have tried to make a case for Gibraltar to be returned to Spain. There are generally good relations between Gibraltar and the neighbouring parts of Spain, with many Spaniards commuting daily to work in Gibraltar.
