The caves have been important in the cultural history of Gibraltar, appearing in the works of Homer, serving as exclusive party venue during the Victorian era and even being prepared as a military hospital in WW2.  They are also used as a prestigious venue for events, including the formal dinners of the UKOTCF conferences in 2000 and 2015.
